It is estimated that 23.5 million hectares of grazing land produce between 2.4 and 3.5 million tonnes of biologically “fixed” nitrogen each year from legumes, through symbiosis with rhizobia. Coating or inoculating seed with rhizobia is the most convenient method of delivering rhizobia to the legume crops and pastures.

Survival of rhizobia on commercially produced preinoculated seed has been shown to be generally low. The project focused on screening polymers and colourants for compatibility with rhizobia to determine their suitability to be used in commercial preinoculated seed coatings.
